Getting Started with Slice

Overview

Slice is a Microsoft Excel add-in for IBM Planning Analytics (TM1) that lets you build, refresh, and write-back to TM1 reports directly from Excel. This page walks you through the first steps to get up and running: installing Slice, connecting to a TM1 server, and exporting your first view.

Prerequisites

  • Microsoft Excel 2016 or later (Windows)

  • A valid TM1 / Planning Analytics server URL and credentials

  • The Slice installer (.exe) provided by your administrator or downloaded from the Cubewise website

Step 1 – Install Slice

  1. Run the Slice installer and follow the on-screen prompts.

  2. Once installation is complete, open Microsoft Excel.

  3. You will see a new Slice tab in the Excel Ribbon.

Tip: If the Slice tab does not appear, go to File → Options → Add-ins, select COM Add-ins, and ensure Slice is checked.

Step 2 – Connect to a TM1 Server

  1. Click the Slice tab in the Ribbon.

  2. Click Connect (or the server icon).

  3. Enter the Server URL for your TM1 / Planning Analytics instance.

    • Example: https://myserver.planning-analytics.ibmcloud.com/tm1/api/myinstance

  4. Enter your username and password.

  5. Click Connect.

Once connected, the Slice Explorer panel opens on the right side of Excel, showing your cubes, dimensions, and views.

Step 3 – Browse the Cube Viewer
