Slice Server Explorer Blank Page Troubleshooting

This article explains how to troubleshoot a blank Server Explorer window in Slice for Excel. In most cases, the issue is caused by a corrupt local cache or security software blocking the embedded browser component used by Slice.

Solution

Start with a local cache reset. This has resolved the issue in reported cases.

  1. Close all Excel files.

  2. Navigate to %AppData%\ArcForTM1\.

  3. Delete all folders named cache*.

  4. Restart Excel and open Slice again.

Other possible cause: antivirus blocking the embedded browser

Slice relies on the EO browser, an embedded browser component, to render the Server Explorer interface inside Excel. Some antivirus or endpoint protection tools may block this browser from being launched by Excel.

This can happen because Excel is starting a browser-like process, which some security tools treat as suspicious behavior under real-time protection or application control policies.

Recommended fix: Add the Slice installation directory to the antivirus software’s exceptions or exclusions list so the required files and processes are trusted.

Extra debugging

If the issue persists, use the built-in debug option for Slice windows inside Excel.

  • Open Excel and start Server Explorer.

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+D while in an Excel worksheet.

  • Select the relevant Slice window from the list, such as Server Explorer or Subset Editor.

  • Click Debug to open Chrome DevTools.

Use the Console and Network tabs to inspect loading errors, blocked resources, or browser-related failures.
