Module 1: Introduction & Training Environment

Training Environment

To go through this training, you need Arc running. Download the latest version of Arc from https://code.cubewise.com/arc-download.

Once Arc is running, set up the training TM1 instance:

Why Unit Testing is Important

What is Unit Testing in TM1?

Unit testing involves validating individual components of your TM1 models — such as cubes, rules, and processes — by testing them in isolation. The primary goal is to ensure that each element behaves as intended, catching potential errors early before they propagate through the larger system. When done regularly, unit testing enhances model accuracy and prevents costly miscalculations.

Why Unit Testing is Crucial

Benefit

Description

Early Detection of Errors

Catching issues at the component level allows for quicker fixes, avoiding potential disruptions during critical planning phases.

Improved Model Reliability

Unit testing helps identify logic flaws in rules and processes, ensuring consistent outcomes across different scenarios.

Faster Development

Creates a robust framework that developers can rely on, reducing time spent on debugging.

Collaboration & Accountability

Teams have a clear understanding of how each component should behave. New changes can be quickly verified without extensive manual testing.

Navigating the Arc Test Hub

Log into Arc and connect to your TM1 instance (TM1SRV01 / admin / apple). The Test Hub is found under the Pulse section in the navigation tree.

Main Components

  1. Unit Tests — Test individual TM1 objects or combinations, focusing on small sections of your rules, TI processes, cube data or dimension structures.

  2. Test Categories — Organisational buckets for tests. For example, a "Data Validation" category to group data-feed tests.

  3. Test Collections — Define how tests are executed in sequence, enabling quicker feedback and easier integration into your development workflow.
